General director Menno Geelen has not claimed his bonus for last season. The AFC Ajax executive voluntarily waived an amount of up to 125,000 euros.
The Supervisory Board had formally awarded the bonus because Geelen met his personal and organisational targets for leadership and culture. "The agreed personal and organisational objectives have been achieved," Geelen said. However, the financial target for the fiscal year was not met and the sporting target was only partially achieved. Ajax finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season and were eliminated in the Champions League group stage.
The club did post a net profit of two million euros, but that was largely due to transfers. Operational deficits were covered by the sales of players including Jorrel Hato, Brian Brobbey and Kenneth Taylor. Three different managers led the team in a turbulent year.
Geelen's move comes as Ajax are experiencing an inconsistent start to the new campaign. The Amsterdam side currently sit fifth with 14 points from seven games. Their last five results were a draw against Excelsior, two wins and a defeat. The current standings show Ajax are five points behind leaders AZ.
