AFC Ajax are dealing with a series of injury concerns ahead of their return to action. Defender Aaron Bouwman is set to return, but striker Kasper Dolberg has been ruled out for an extended period.

The club, sitting fifth in the Eredivisie with 14 points, host NEC Nijmegen on 10 October. That is followed by a trip to Croatia for their first UEFA Conference League group stage match against Hajduk Split, and then an away fixture at FC Groningen. This busy spell coincides with several absences.

Bouwman ready for return

Aaron Bouwman picked up his injury in the match against PSV Eindhoven and subsequently missed games against Fortuna Sittard, Willem II and Excelsior. In a club video, the defender indicated he has recovered well. "Yes, definitely," Bouwman said when asked. He is expected to be available again after the international break.

Long-term absence for Dolberg

A more significant worry is the situation surrounding Kasper Dolberg. The Danish forward, who scored twice and provided three assists in Ajax's last three games before the break, was called up by his national team. He withdrew due to a knee injury. Denmark manager Brian Riemer told the press that "one player had completely dislocated his knee". The Danish FA confirmed Dolberg suffered a knee injury and will be sidelined for a long period. His recent form, with a direct goal contribution every 54 minutes, will now be sorely missed.

Uncertainty over Blind and Adingra

Veteran Daley Blind, 36, has not played since 13 August. Former player Hedwiges Maduro said on a podcast that the issue "seems to have something to do with a nerve. That is always tricky". Co-host Lawrence de Munck added that Blind's back problems are a recurring issue. Also, deadline-day loan signing Simon Adingra has yet to make his debut due to an injury, which is reportedly not serious. He was recently seen in training.

With Julian Brandt as this season's top scorer on four goals, Ajax will need to find creativity during a congested schedule. The full squad list and upcoming fixtures will be key to maintaining momentum, especially after drawing with Excelsior in their last league outing. Their next opponent, NEC Nijmegen, currently sit 11th and drew 1-1 in Amsterdam back in February. Ajax's recent form of just one win from their last four league matches needs to improve.
