AFC Ajax have signed experienced midfielder Yves Bissouma on Wednesday. The 30-year-old Malian international has joined on a one-year deal as a free agent following his departure from Tottenham Hotspur.

Technical director Jordi Cruijff confirmed the arrival of the 46-cap player. "Discussions with Yves began in August and we are happy he has now signed here," said Cruijff. "With him we have brought in an experienced player who knows how things work at the highest level."

Bissouma played eight years in the Premier League, first for Brighton & Hove Albion and since 2022 for Tottenham. In total he made 202 appearances at the top level in England. The midfielder, who can operate as both a holding player and a number eight, is the third seasoned professional Cruijff has brought to Amsterdam this summer, following Julian Brandt and Sofyan Amrabat.

The Malian was enthusiastic about his move to the Johan Cruijff ArenA. "I feel really happy," said Bissouma. "It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe." He also aims to contribute off the pitch. "I want to give them advice. They are super professional. I know that for sure, because I have spoken with the manager."

Bissouma's arrival provides Ajax with more depth and experience in midfield. The Amsterdam squad currently sits fourth in the Eredivisie with thirteen points from six matches. Top scorer is Julian Brandt with three goals. The team won 5-1 against Willem II last Saturday, underlining their recent form. In their last five league matches, Ajax have taken 13 points, averaging 2.6 points per game.

His career in England was marked by regular injuries. In 2024 he also faced disciplinary action from Tottenham after an incident involving laughing gas. Nonetheless, Ajax see him as a valuable addition. Technical director Cruijff has brought in eleven new players this summer in total, including Marc ter Stegen, Daley Blind and Simon Adingra.

The Malian international could make his debut soon. Ajax play at home against Excelsior this Saturday, a side currently sixth in the table. Fans can check the full fixtures list. Bissouma's contract runs until the summer of 2027. The club's season goal is to reach 90 points and reclaim the league title.
