AFC Ajax is active in the transfer market with concrete interest in two new players. The Amsterdam club wants to loan Sunderland winger Simon Adingra and is simultaneously negotiating a loan for defender Thilo Kehrer from AS Monaco, the Telegraaf reported this week.
The team of manager Michel Sanchez currently sits fourth in the Eredivisie with seven points from three games. Ajax has scored eight goals and conceded two, giving them a goal difference of plus six. They trail leaders AZ Alkmaar by five points. The next major test is the home fixture against PSV Eindhoven on September 5th, a match against the second-placed side.
What does the arrival of Simon Adingra mean?
Simon Adingra is a 24-year-old left winger currently under contract at Sunderland. Ajax aims to loan him for this season. According to technical director Jordi Cruijff, the total cost for the loan period, including salary and loan fee, would amount to 3.8 million euros. "Should a definitive agreement be reached, Ajax will pay a total amount – salary and a loan fee – of 3.8 million euros," Cruijff said.
The attacker began his career at Nordsjaelland, who signed him in January 2021. Brighton & Hove Albion bought him in July 2022 for eight million euros. After 73 appearances for the English club, Brighton sold him to Sunderland for 24.4 million euros. Adingra played fifteen matches for Sunderland and was then loaned to AS Monaco for the final months of the season. In total, he has played 213 official matches for his previous clubs, scoring 55 goals and providing 32 assists.
Why is Ajax looking at Thilo Kehrer?
In addition to a new attacker, Ajax is also seeking reinforcements for its defence. The club is in talks with AS Monaco over a loan for 29-year-old German international Thilo Kehrer. The right-back and centre-back has 28 caps for Germany. Kehrer came through the ranks at Schalke 04 and made a 37 million euro move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2018.
He made 128 appearances for PSG. Four years later, the French club sold him for twelve million euros to West Ham United, where he played fifty matches. After a loan spell, AS Monaco signed him permanently in the summer of 2024 for eleven million euros. He played 99 games for Monaco. "Should the technical director succeed in bringing Kehrer in, he will add another chunk of experience to Michel Sanchez's squad," said Cruijff. The club has also reserved space for medicals for Paul Reverson. The 21-year-old defender, who previously played for Jong Ajax, will be loaned to De Graafschap this season. That club has secured an option to buy. These movements fit a broader strategy to balance the squad with experience and young talent.
