AFC Ajax has a remarkable message for left-back Youri Baas. The defender may not play as left-back for the Amsterdam team next season, but as a central defender. Coach Francesco Farioli has asked the defender if he can also play centrally. The coach has implemented the position change, which arose from the fact that Ajax has many left-backs, after consulting with Baas during the preparation matches of the Amsterdam team. That's going well, according to Baas. Baas recently returned to Amsterdam after a successful loan period at NEC in Nijmegen. When he first spoke to Farioli, the Italian came up with a surprising message: 'We have a lot of left-backs in our selection, so the coach said: it's also an option to play you centrally.' Since then, Baas has trained and played a lot in that position. The left-footed defender admits that it's been a long time since he played as a left central defender, but that it did happen in the youth academy. 'I get a lot of ball on this spot and that's where my qualities lie, I think', says Baas, who has an excellent kicking technique. 'And that dribbling, that's also something the coach wants to see. We want to play the ball around, around, around, then switch sides and then someone has to attack the spaces.' It's a new way of playing that takes getting used to for Baas, says the defender - who makes a good impression. 'Defensively, it's a bit of an adjustment, you get into different situations, but I think it's going well', says Baas, who still doesn't know what his future looks like. 'I don't know how much chance I have of playing time, we have a lot of players now. I just try to do my best in every training and every match and then we'll see', concludes the down-to-earth footballer. Ajax also has Owen Wijndal and Borna Sosa on the left-back position, in addition to Baas. Both internationals seem to be the coach's preferred choice for their position over Baas, who still has a contract until mid-2026 in Amsterdam. The youth international has played ten matches in Ajax's first team so far. Baas is still looking for his place in Farioli's team. But he's positive about his chances. 'I think I have a good chance of playing, but I don't know. I just have to do my best and then we'll see', says Baas. The future of Baas at Ajax is still uncertain, but he's determined to conquer his place in the team.
