Julian Brandt gave a subdued reaction after scoring the opening goal for AFC Ajax against Fortuna Sittard on Saturday night. The German midfielder explained afterwards that his muted celebration was born from self-criticism.

Brandt spoke to ESPN following the 5-1 victory. "I wasn't very happy with my play yet; I had a few sloppy passes," said the 30-year-old. "I wasn't happy, and this was more a moment to show my feelings rather than run around and celebrate with everyone." He added that he is not a big celebrator by nature. "Anyway, I'm not really the type to celebrate extensively. It was natural."

Importance

Brandt's goal broke the deadlock against a deep-lying Fortuna Sittard defence. It was his fourth goal in all competitions since joining on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund. With three goals in six appearances, he is Ajax's current top scorer this season. The team sits fourth in the Eredivisie with thirteen points from six games.

Thilo Kehrer, Davy Klaassen, Kasper Dolberg and Youri Baas also scored in Sittard. It was Ajax's second consecutive win, following a 5-1 victory over Willem II last Wednesday. The arrival of the experienced Brandt, a 48-cap German international who played in the 2024 Champions League final, is meant to provide creativity against deep defensive blocks in the Eredivisie and UEFA Conference League.

Manager Michel Sanchez can rely on a player who sets high standards for himself. Ajax's next opportunity comes on Thursday at home against Excelsior, who are sixth in the table. The current standings and upcoming fixtures are available online. The squad list, including player statistics like Brandt's, is on our squad page. Ajax will be without the injured Aaron Bouwman for the match.
