AFC Ajax mourns passing of Hassie van Wijk (87)
AFC Ajax has announced with sadness the passing of former youth and assistant coach Hassie van Wijk (87). Van Wijk was a key figure at the Amsterdam club in the 1970s and early 1980s, where he coached Ajax A1 and Ajax 2.
Who was Hassie van Wijk?
Van Wijk, a former midfielder, began his coaching career at Ajax and later worked as an assistant to head coach Aad de Mos with the first team. He was seen as a promising coach and guided talents like Marco van Basten in the youth setup. His career ended abruptly after a tragic accident during a friendly match against HMSH in January 1984.
What happened in 1984?
During the friendly match, a concrete dug-out collapsed, seriously injuring Van Wijk. His left foot was crushed, leading to the amputation of five toes. He also suffered a spinal injury. A return to football proved impossible, and Van Wijk subsequently withdrew from the sport.
His career as a player
Before his coaching career, Van Wijk played for clubs like Telstar, ADO, De Volewijckers, and AZ'67. Ajax extends its condolences to Van Wijk's family. The club currently sits fifth in the Eredivisie with 51 points, 23 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven.
