AFC Ajax was founded on March 18, 1900, in Amsterdam. The club was named after the Greek hero Ajax. In its early years, Ajax mainly played in regional competitions and gradually began to make a name for itself in Dutch football.
The 1970s are often regarded as Ajax's golden era. Under the guidance of coach Rinus Michels and with stars like Johan Cruyff, the club won three consecutive European Cups from 1971 to 1973.
